Tips for searching
Is the search engine case sensitive?
The search engine has the ability to distinguish between variations in case
in a search term entered. If you enter a term in lower case, the engine
will match all case variants of the word. If you enter a term in UPPER
case, or mix upper and lower case in the one term, the search engine will only match
documents containing terms matching the same case as you entered.
What if I want to match only lower case words?
If you enter a word in quotation marks ("), again, the search engine will only
match the same case as what you have entered, even if the term you entered is only in
lower case. Additionally, this disables stemming on that term as well (see next question
for more on stemming).
Does the search engine stem the words I type in?
Normally, the search engine will search for not only the term you entered, but
for variants of the term as well with, for example, different suffixes.
e.g. if you enter film can be specified in a query as the terms
films, filming, or filmed may also
match your search.
What is a phrase search?
A phrase search is a group of words in quotation marks ("). Such a search only
matches documents that contain the terms in the same order as your input.
What are "names"?
If you select the name in the advanced search form, the search will be
case sensitive, and the word will not be stemmed.
Can I mix and match these options?
Yes!
